Title: Kairos Day Session Volunteer
Supported by: Volunteer Coordinator
Main purpose: To work on a one-to-one basis with a female service user to give emotional and practical support in order to help her achieve her goals.
Overview of Role
We are looking for female volunteers who have an interest in working with vulnerable women, particularly those who have a history of sex working and substance misuse and would like to enhance their knowledge and/or understanding of this area of work. If you feel you have skills in listening, motivating and providing emotional and practical support, you may be able to both give and receive considerable experience.
•Meet with the Service User in a public place on a regular basis.
•Help the Service User to identify goals she wishes to achieve and help her compile an action plan to achieve those goals.
•Support the service user in meeting her agreed actions.
•Liaise with the Volunteer Coordinator about the action plan and access support from the Volunteer Coordinator as needed.
•Attend monthly supervision sessions with the Volunteer Coordinator.
•Help build self-confidence and motivate the Service User.
•Guide the Service User by signposting her to other organisations.
•Ability to listen well, taking a non-judgmental approach.
•Ability to communicate well in English; both verbally and in writing.
•Understand the principals of equal opportunities and non-discrimination.
•Awareness of your own limitations and boundaries.
•Have a good understanding of action planning and able to write one with the Service User.
•Ability to work independently.
•Be aware of the importance of confidentiality.
•Does not need to be a professional advisor or counsellor.
•It helps to have a sense of humour and be flexible in your approach to volunteering as this role can be quite varied.
•The ability to work with a range of people from a variety of social and cultural backgrounds.
•Be open to new ideas and experiences.
•Be open and able to offer an alternative view to situations and problems.
Befriendees should ideally have completed three months volunteering with Kairos; either as a Day Session volunteer, or as a Drop In volunteer. Volunteers will be required to attend one training session specifically related to befriending. Further training opportunities for training will be discussed and offered, where possible and may be provided by other agencies.
Times and Commitment
It is hoped you will commit to meeting with the Befriendee for 1-2 hours every fortnight and then speaking to her on the phone during the ‘non-contact weeks’. It is also hoped that this relationship will last for 3 – 18 months.
